Palais Schönborn-Batthyány, Renngasse 4, 1010 Wien

Built in 1699 to Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach’s designs, on the ground where Field Marshal Adam Count Batthyány lived — one of the architectural masterpieces of Baroque Vienna, on the Renngasse a few steps from the Freyung. The Wiener Barock Orchester plays in its Roter Salon.

The palace’s red damask salon on the piano nobile: carved walnut doors, one crystal chandelier, eleven rows of chairs eight either side of a centre aisle.

Who plays

Soloists: The orchestra’s own opera singers take the arias and the duets, and its leader the solo violin.

Baroque and classical in a palace salon

The Wiener Barock Orchester plays what its own ticket shop calls the Wiener Barock & Klassik Konzerte: an evening that begins with Mozart and Vivaldi and ends with Brahms, Tchaikovsky and Lehár. Musicians and opera singers work together through it — the arias and the duets are sung, not played, and the singers step forward from the ensemble rather than appearing as guests.

The room is the reason to come. The Roter Salon of the Palais Schönborn-Batthyány is a red damask salon on the piano nobile with carved walnut doors and one crystal chandelier, a hundred and seventy-six chairs eight either side of a centre aisle. Fischer von Erlach — the architect of the Karlskirche — built the palace on the Renngasse in 1699.

Know before you book

  • The house assigns your seat inside the category you choose; we ask for your party to be seated together. VIP is the first four rows and includes a drink.
  • Musicians and opera singers together: a Mozart overture and arias, Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, Donizetti, Tchaikovsky, Brahms and Lehár — the orchestra sets the programme itself and may change it on the night.
  • One room: the Roter Salon of the Palais Schönborn-Batthyány, Renngasse 4. Every night we sell begins at 6.30 p.m.; the orchestra’s own terms give that concert as running to about a quarter to eight, and each date prints its own start time.
  • A hundred and seventy-six chairs in a red damask salon under one chandelier — this is a palace room, not a concert hall.
  • The salon is on the piano nobile, up the palace’s main staircase. The orchestra publishes no accessibility information: ask us before you book and we will confirm with them.
  • Your QR e-ticket and wallet pass are issued the moment you pay.

Questions guests ask

Answered by the Vienna Evening counter.
  • What is included in the price?

Everything. The price shown is the price charged: our booking fee is €0.00 and we print it on your order at €0.00 rather than leaving it out.

  • When is my ticket issued?

At checkout. Your QR code, wallet pass and PDF exist the moment your card is charged.

  • What does VIP add?

A seat in the first four rows and a drink. It is the same concert from every category.

  • Why can I not pick a seat?

The house sells no numbered seat. You book a category — the first four rows, the middle of the salon or the last two rows — and the house seats you inside it. The plan on this page is a plan of the room, not a picture of what is free.

  • How long is the concert?

The orchestra’s own terms of business give the half-past-six concert as running to about a quarter to eight. They publish no exact running time, and we do not invent one.

  • Is dinner included?

No. The orchestra sells a concert-and-dinner evening with Café Landtmann and the SERVUS Restaurant; that is a different package and we do not sell it. What you book here is the concert.

  • How should I dress?

As you like. There is no dress code, though a Baroque salon invites you to make an evening of it.

  • Can I change the date?

Yes, free, until 48 hours before, for the same category, up to twice. If the new date costs more you pay the difference; if it costs less, your original price stands.

  • Until when can I cancel?

Fourteen days from purchase, and never inside 48 hours of the concert — whichever comes first. The exact date is printed on your order line.

  • Will my party sit together?

We always book your party on one order and ask the house to seat you together inside your category. If they seat you apart, tell us and we will put it right.

  • What if you cannot supply it?

You are refunded in full and immediately, whatever the date, and told that we could not supply it. There is no voucher and no substitute you did not choose.
