Standing room at the Vienna State Opera

The cheapest way into the house, and it is sold by the house alone.

The auditorium of the Wiener Staatsoper seen from the stage: five tiers of red and gold boxes under the chandelier

Standing places at the State Opera are sold by the house alone, on the day of the performance. We do not sell them and cannot sell them: there is nothing for us to hold.

How it works

  1. Buy on the day, from 10:00The house puts its 435 standing places on sale at 10:00 on the day of the performance, in its own online ticket shop. Nothing is sold earlier, by anybody.
  2. Check that evening’s pricePrices start at €4 with the house’s BT-Card and depend on the performance. The ticket shop shows the price for each one.
  3. Claim your placeOnce inside, standing places are held by tying a scarf to the rail. This is a real convention, not a joke, and it is how people leave to get a drink.

Verification withheld

What happens at the house in the evening once the morning sale has opened, and how early to be ready for a famous title or singer.

The house’s ticket page describes the 10:00 sale and nothing after it, and we would rather print nothing than guess at a queue.

The house’s own ticket page, read on 2 October 2026. Check it on the day; it is the only source that is right about its own prices.

You will hear the same orchestra as the person who paid two hundred euros.

Is it worth it

If you want to hear the house rather than be seen in it, yes. You will stand for three hours and you will hear the same orchestra as the person who paid two hundred euros. If you want a comfortable evening with an interval drink and a seat to come back to, buy a seat.

Can I buy standing room from you?
No. Standing places are sold by the house alone, on the day of the performance. There is nothing for us to hold and nothing to resell.
What does it cost?
From €4 with the house’s BT-Card, as its own ticket page puts it. The price depends on the performance, and the house’s ticket shop shows it for each one.
When do standing places go on sale?
At 10:00 on the day of the performance, in the house’s own online ticket shop.
Do I have to queue?
Not for the ticket: the house sells standing places online from 10:00 on the day of the performance.
What is the scarf for?
It is how a standing place is claimed once you are inside: you tie it to the rail. It is a real convention and it is respected.
Is standing room a good idea for a first visit?
It is a good idea if you are there for the music and you can stand for three hours. If you want an evening rather than a performance, buy a seat.
